Posco to produce 3.2m t stainless this year

Posco expects its total stainless crude steel output to climb to 3.16m tonnes this year, up from 2.9m t in 2010, a company spokesman tells Steel Business Briefing. The numbers include output from its Pohang works as well as other domestic and foreign subsidiaries.
The 9% forecast rise can be attributed mainly to an increase in melting capacity at its Chinese stainless subsidiary Zhangjiagang Pohang Stainless Steel (ZPSS). Melting capacity at the Zhangjiagang works in eastern Jiangsu province was increased by 200,000 tonnes/year to 1m t/y around June this year, as SBB reported. ZPSS’ stainless cold rolling capacity was also lifted from 400,000 t/y to 600,000 t/y around the same time.
In Korea, Posco produced 1.47m t of stainless crude steel in the first three quarters of this year. Its output at home was 1.97m t for the whole of 2010.
