Severstal aims at over 400,000t pre-painted output in Russia

Cherepovets Steelworks aims to produce slightly over 400,000 tonnes of pre-painted coil this year, almost double the amount it made in 2011. Last year, Cherepovets mill dispatched roughly 221,000t of pre-painted, the mill’s parent company Severstal announced.
Cherepovets works has ramped up its second colour-coating line that had been commissioned in late November 2011 to the full capacity of 200,000 t/y in four months thanks to the strong domestic demand in the Russian market and is now running both lines flat out, SBB understands.
Its rival pre-pained coil supplier Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works is also running flat out on its pre-painted lines, it told Platts Steel Business Briefing.
This year, Russia’s consumption of pre-painted coil may grow by 6% on 2011 to reach 1.9mt, as previously reported. If this is realised, Severstal may account for at least a fifth of the domestic market, providing the mill sells most of its output domestically, SBB understood.
Russian mills are stepping up their role at home in a bid to partially replace imports. Last year, 1.5mt - a third of the country’s total coated coil consumption, which also included HDG, - was imported. Meanwhile, Russia made 1.05mt of pre-painted and its total colour-coating capacity of 1.6m t/y was largely underused, as reported.
