Turkey produced 2.36 million tonnes of slab in the first three months of 2012, 4.2% up year-on-year. The growth rate slowed from 9% y-o-y in January-February due to lower demand in both domestic and export markets in March.
According to data provided by the Turkish Iron and Steel Producers’ Association (DCUD), Turkish crude steel production reached 9.03m t, 13.7% up y-o-y. A DCUD executive tells Platts Steel Business Briefing demand for flat products is weak, and the future of the market is uncertain. Therefore, producers with both flats and longs capacities currently prefer to produce billet which is in strong demand from the Middle East.
The slowdown in flats output growth rate was also due to high import tonnages; domestic flats capacity is on the increase, but local buyers have not yet become accustomed to sourcing products locally, the DCUD says in a release, adding that Turkey will retain its trend of producing a minimum of 3mt tonnes of crude steel monthly.
