 Ukraine's pig iron output level, steel fell, pipe grew

 Ukraine’s pig iron and crude steel production went in different directions in the first four months of 2012.
The nation’s pig iron output came to 9.6m tonnes in January-April after a 1% uptick year-on-year. But crude steel production slipped 5% to 11.13mt, and steel product output fell still more sharply to 9.9m t which was 10% down on January-April 2011, Platts Steel Business Briefing learnt from the country’s steel industry association Metallurgprom.
One reason for the divergence is that Donetsk Iron & Steel Plant permanently closed all its four open hearth steelmaking furnaces immediately after the end of Q1, to focus on making pig iron until Q4, when it will resume steelmaking with the commissioning of its first EAF.
Ukraine’s steel pipe production was better off. In the period under review, the country made 793,000t of pipes, which is 7% more than the 740,000t the country produced in January-April 2011. Large-diameter pipes comprised just under one third (31%) or 246,000t out of the total and were 17% up on the 210,000t produced in the same period last year, according to Metallurgprom.
