 Saudi Arabia: Hadeed SABIC steel production exceeds 4.4 mt in 2009

 ArabSteel - Saudi Iron & Steel Co.(Hadeed), one of SABIC companies, achieved 4.4 million tons in production figures for 2009, consisting of long and flat products. It is the second highest figure ever reached for this decade by the company, after the one achieved in 2007 when production reached 4.7 mt. This figure represents a rise in production by 2.3% compared to 2008 production which stands at 4.3 mt. according to figures «Arab Steel» had from company sources.
Most of this increase in production is due to the ramping up of longs production that reached 3.235 mt in 2009 compared to 3.035 mt in 2008, thus achieving a growth rate of 6.6% year-on-year.
This increase in long products output, of which rebar makes 80% of the overall production, reflects the state in Saudi steel market that witnessed positive growth rates in 2009 mainly due to a growing domestic demand, real-estate ongoing growth on both individual as well as governmental levels.
This growth lead producing companies to raise their output, and that might have also been to compensate for the price drop that have seen little change in Saudi market during 2009.
The production figures indicate the remarkable improvement achieved in Q4, 2009 when compared to the 3 previous quarters. Thus, growth rate jumped to 6.6% calculated for the whole year, whereas it was at 1.9% for the first three quarters of 2009, Q1 even recorded negative growth when compared to the same period of 2008.
Crude steel production during 2009 have seen new production records reaching 4.6 mt/y; the same figure reached in DRI production. HR flats production neared 1.2 mt, falling behind the figure of 2008 by approximately 140,000 t.
On the other hand, cold rolled, coated and galvanized flats witnessed positive growth that boosted domestic demand growth rates in Saudi markets during 2009.
