El Fouladh's billet production increased in 2009

ArabSteel – Societe Tnisienne De Siderurgie - El Fouladh registered an increase in billet production for 2009. Billet production figure neared 155,000t compared to 82,000t in 2008, thus rising by 21%, according to information «Arab Steel» got from company sources.
This increase was due to the 2nd electric arc furnace entering production phase early July 2009 with a capacity reaching 100,000t per annum. This comes after the first expansion of the EAF in the company completed in 2007. Therefore, the company now has an overall production capacity of billets reaching 200,000t/y. This rise in billet production is expected to reflect on an increase in rebar and wire-rod production which achieved 98,000t of rebar and 10,000t of drawn wires in 2009.
The production of El Fouladh covers an important portion of the local market needs that are met through local production as well as imports from the world market. The company sales of rebar and wire in 2009 recorded more than 215,000t, 50% of which come from local production and the rest via imports.
El Fouladh production during H2, 2009 improved when compared to H1 of the same year in rebar and billet production alike.
El Fouladh is the primary state-owned billet producer in Tunisia, while there are several private-sector rebar mills.
