17.4Mt of imports for Arab countries in 9 months during 2009

ArabSteel - Imports to Arab member countries in AISU during the first 9 months of 2009 amounted to 12.7Mt of long products and 4.7Mt of flat products, as compared to 14.6Mt of longs and 6.8Mt of flats for the same period of 2008. That marked a decline by 13% in longs imports and 30% for flats according to figures «Arab Steel» got from ISSB in London.
Egypt's steel imports marked new records with regard to LP during the first 9 months of 2009 compared to the same period of 2008, rising from 225,000t to 2.8Mt, i.e. increasing by 1170%. Meanwhile, UAE imports fell to 1.7Mt after recording 7Mt for the same period of 2008, thus declining by 76%.
Algeria's imports of 2.8Mt constituted 22% of the overall Arab imports for the first 9 months of 2009. Long products imports of four Arab countries, Egypt, Algeria, UAE and Iraq, comprised 67.7% of the overall imports.
According to the ISSB data, nine Arab countries realized an increase in imports during the 1st nine months of 2009 when compared with the same period of 2008 regarding long products.
