Rajhi Steel plans to increase production and diversify its product range with a new SAR 15 billion ($4bn) steelmaking complex in Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah Economic City. The steelworks will have 1.8 m tonnes/year direct reduced iron and 650,000t/y hot briquetted iron production capacity, as well as a 2m t/y melt shop. The complex will also produce billet, some 400,000t of which will be allocated for production of light sections, and 200,000t for production of 2.5-7 inch diameter seamless pipes. It will also possess 200,000t/y special steel and stainless steel ingot producing capacity. The facility will also have 1m t/y hot rolling capacity for slab, heavy sections and jumbo size sections, which will enable the company to produce rails for new railway projects in Saudi Arabia. Rajhi Steel will thus be the country’s first rail producer. Total finished products output is expected to reach 2.65mt in 2016. The steelmaker currently has 250,000t/y flats rerolling and tube capacity, 850,000t/y billet and 500,000t/y rebar and light sections capacity.
