Severstal upgrades Izhora pipe mill

Russian miner and steelmaker Severstal plans to invest just over 1bn roubles ($35.5m) in its Izhora large-diameter pipe plant between 2011 and 2013, a representative of Severstal tells Steel Business Briefing without detailing what upgrades or expansions will take place.
The decision to upgrade Izhora complements an expansion of Severstal’s 5,000mm wide plate mill, which feeds Izhora with plate for pipemaking. The plate mill is situated next to Izhora in Kolpino near St Petersburg.
Severstal is raising the plate mill’s production capacity by 80,000 tonnes/year inspired by strong demand from Russian fuel and energy companies and the engineering sector. The project will see mill motors replaced with more powerful units that will take the mill’s capacity to 780,000 t/y. The work is costing 2.3bn roubles and will be completed in 2013, Severstal’s representative.
The plan to upgrade Izhora may also be prompted by increasingly complex requirements of Russian large diameter pipe (LDP) users. Thus in autumn 2010, Izhora developed production of LDP with wall thickness of 37.9mm for the first time since the plant was commissioned in 2006. Although Izhora is capable of producing LDP with wall thickness up to 40mm, it was only recently required to make pipes with wall thickness up to nearly 38mm intended for use in the gas pipeline system constructed by Russia's Gazprom in the Yamal peninsula in northwest Siberia.
